Don't just leave them in the crate. Put their crates in a room with their food, water and litter box, and let them stay in that room for the night. The next day, you can let them explore a little more. Basically, do it room-by-room, and let them spend the night in the original room. It's less stressful than having a huge new area to explore, and if there is a certain area they are not allowed in, you simply don't let them in that room; they're less likely to scratch at the door if they don't know what's in there!I am moving and was wondering how long should I leave my cats in their crates once we get to the new house?
I think it's best to set them up in a small room with their necessities where they can have some calm from the hubbub of the moving.
They will let you know when they are ready to come out to explore their new surroundings. The greatest danger is their escaping the house - so with all the going in and out, etc. it's best to know they are safely shut in one place until things settle down.
If they are accustomed to being ';outside'; cats hold off on that for several weeks. They need to make a good adjustment to the house before you let them venture outside. That also gives you time to learn about your new neighborhood - traffic issues, new neighbor issues, dangerous dogs in the next yards, etc.I am moving and was wondering how long should I leave my cats in their crates once we get to the new house?
Leave them in crates until you are settled for the night. Let them roam - at least at night in the house and check their new surroundings. Make sure they know where the litterbox and food/water are. Also make sure they can't get into places they shouldn't. In a few days they'll be okay. This is a big adjustment for them too.
Get them into a secure room with food, water and litter. Leave them there overnight. The next day, let them check out the new place while you are at home. They should do just fine. Just make sure you watch the doors- some cats get a little confused and may try to dart outside. You are wonderful for not leaving them when you moved- you would be horrified how many people don't take their pets when they move. (I'm in rescue, so I see it and it always makes me mad). I hope you have a great move and best wishes!
Not long. Make sure you get all the furnitures and boxes in. Or just lock them in a secure room with food, water and litter box. You don't want the risk of them running out the front door. Once everything is in let them check out their new place. I keep my cat in the new house for a week before he can explore the yard.
