we had just moved into a new house, and we are trying to potty train our maltese. he has been having a lot of accidents. and tips or sites that can help me.Potty Traning a Maltese in a new house. Any tips? Or sites that can help??
I did crate training with my choc lab pup. During the day he has a 6 foot play pen he stays in. At night is when he goes into his crate, he always gets a small treat at night when he goes in to reasure the crate is a good / safe thing. If your going to do this it does take a lot of commitment. A pup in general can hold their bladder 1 hour per month old +1 extra hour. My lab is now 5 months so he can go 6 hours during the night without having to be let out but do expect to let your puppy out once or twice at night to let him relieve himself. You do not want him to get a bladder infection or other urinary track problems from holding it in to long in which case they will usually do in a crate since the do not want to dirty their sleeping area. During the day I take my dog out every couple hours and he does a great job about doing his business outside. Once he does his business I give him a little free roaming of the house and I also leave his crate open if he wants to go to his ';safe spot'; and take a nap. This has been very successful for me and I hope for the best with you and your pup.Potty Traning a Maltese in a new house. Any tips? Or sites that can help??
Try crate training. Get a crate. Keep the dog in the crate at all times that it can't be directly supervised. Each time you take the dog out of the crate, carry it outside to a spot where you want it to do its business. When it does, praise it in a happy voice. Any time it is out of the crate and it attempts to urinate, pick it up and take it outside. Again, praise it when it goes. Dogs thrive on praise and they really want to please their masters. If you are faithful to this method, it wont take long to get it trained.
