I live in Victoria Australia and was wondering about products sold here that are effective. Next to vinegar (you dilute w/ water) you can test in area that nobody will see, to make sure it won't damage the carpet. However, I wash my clothes in vinegar (excellent for removing grim, dirt, residual soap, odors, like Diesel fuel) and it does not harm any of my colored clothes.

Here is a site that I would highly recommend. They have very high quality stain removal techniques. I would suggest repeating the process after the first application, and rinsing the rug out with cool water in between applications. Best of luck!
don't know if these items would be sold in Austrailia but here are a few things I have used with good results oxyclean granuals in squirt bottle with water. Oderban for the lingering smells. make sure to use some kind of steam cleaner with extraction.
Ammonia is what you want to use. Ammonia will break up the proteins in the urine. Getting rid of the odor that it may cause. Vinegar should not lighten the color of your carpets.
