open mean to let out oders and closed mean to keep out cold air.
Open for air circulation thats why they are there. But make sure they are covered with harware cloth or foundation sceens. So some animal cant get in there and die..then you will wish you were dead from the smell...
Open in warm weather, closed in cold weather. I would leave it open year long if you live in a humid climate.
Open in summer. Closed in winter.
